Two retainers, Horibe Yatsubei and Horibe Yajibei, are named here, drawn from the night-raid episode of *Kanadehon Chūshingura*. The play dramatizes the vendetta of the forty-seven masterless samurai from Akō, who avenged their lord's forced suicide by storming the Edo residence of Kira Yoshinaka in the snow of 1702. The print is signed by Utagawa Kunisada, the most prolific designer of the late Edo period, and dates from roughly 1818 to 1830, when kabuki audiences knew the story so well that a pair of names could evoke the whole night. It is worth noticing how the design turns a stage tableau into a portrait of two warriors.
