The title, *Yotsumeya Nishikigi*, names a particular setting, and the print's tall, narrow format (about 67 by 12 centimeters) marks it as a hashira-e, or pillar print, meant to hang vertically or stand beside a column. It is a full-color woodblock nishiki-e, which dates it to the mid-1770s, when multicolor printing had recently become common in Edo. Its subject is women in everyday domestic life, a favorite theme of Edo printmakers of the period. The print is worth studying for its color and its record of how urban women were shown in leisure and daily routine.
