A canary perches beside a blossoming peony in this vertical chuban print, a pairing of bird and flower that was a favorite subject in early nineteenth-century Edo. The format is called kishi-e, after the Kishi school of painting, whose naturalistic animal and flower pictures were widely copied in woodblock prints. The sheet is a later impression, and its edges have been trimmed, so some of the original margins are gone. Its date falls in the early 1830s, when bird-and-flower designs were especially popular with townspeople who wanted decorative images for their homes.
