Night Rain at Karasaki" is the title of this vertical print, which shows the western shore of Lake Biwa in Ōmi Province, where a celebrated pine grove grew near the water. It belongs to a series of paired views of Ōmi, a set of eight poetic scenes adapted from Chinese landscape tradition, and the sheet combines the three elements its record highlights: a lake, rain, and night. Printed as a color woodcut between about 1804 and 1818, it reflects the period's popularity for landscape prints that turned famous places into moods and seasons.
