This three-sheet color woodcut is a vertical triptych, with the sheets running side by side to form a single image about 73 centimeters wide. Its title, *Meiyo migi ni tekinashi hidarijingorō*, names Hidari Jingorō, a legendary carver whose skill was said to be unmatched and who is traditionally credited with works at the Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō, including the famous sleeping cat. Its subject, sculpture in Japan, reflects the late 1840s, when woodblock artists often used such famous figures to comment on craft, reputation, and the admired artisan.
