Ichikawa Ebizō is named as the sitter, and the name belonged to a line of Edo kabuki actors whose bold, exaggerated *aragoto* style made them popular. This narrow hosoban sheet, printed in the urushi-e manner, uses glossy, lacquer-like pigments that give the colors a raised, shining finish. Torii Kiyomasu II, who worked in Edo in the 1720s through the early 1760s, was a leading designer of actor portraits, and prints like this one captured the look of a performer on stage for audiences who could not attend in person.
