The title names Hidari Jingorō, the 17th-century carver whose work at the Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō made him one of Japan's most celebrated sculptors. The title's phrasing, which sets a famous figure on the right against an unrivaled one on the left, suggests a comparison of renowned names, a popular device in late Edo prints. Printed as a vertical triptych of three color woodcut sheets around 1847 to 1850, the work reflects a period when Edo publishers favored large multi-sheet compositions. Viewers should look at how the three panels read together as one continuous design.
