Kume, a hermit said to have gained immortality, is shown peering at a woman doing laundry, the moment that in the well-known legend cost him his supernatural powers and sent him tumbling back to earth. The sheet is a monochrome woodcut in sumizuri-e, a black-ink style that was inexpensive to produce, and it is attributed to Sugimura Jihei, an early Edo printmaker. The record suggests it is probably one sheet from a 12-part series made between about 1685 and 1695, when printed images of everyday life and popular legend were becoming a commercial business in Edo.
