*Objects of the Sea* is a color woodcut whose subject is shells rather than the landscapes or actors that dominate Japanese printmaking. It is a sōsaku-hanga, or "creative print," in which the artist designed, carved and printed the block personally instead of dividing the work among specialists, as traditional ukiyo-e workshops did. The Library of Congress dates it to the 1950s, though a note in its record questions that date and proposes 1914. The print appeared in the Library's 2001 ukiyo-e exhibition beside the older tradition it grew from.
