*Yamaotoko I*, a 1963 color woodcut, pairs a mountaineering subject with doves, an unexpected combination that gives the image a quiet, almost symbolic tone. It belongs to the sōsaku-hanga, or "creative print," movement, in which an artist designed, carved and printed the block personally instead of dividing the work among specialists as ukiyo-e publishers had done. The Library of Congress included it in *The Floating World of Ukiyo-e* (2001), where it appears as a later point on the same woodblock tradition. Its date makes it a useful marker of how Japanese printmakers carried the medium into the postwar period.
