A horse-filled circus ring gives this 1959 color woodcut its subject, and ground mica worked into the surface adds a glimmer that catches the light. The print belongs to the sōsaku-hanga, or "creative print," movement, in which artists carved and printed their own blocks instead of splitting the work among designers, carvers, and printers as traditional ukiyo-e workshops did. That shift gave the image a more personal hand. The Library of Congress included it in a 2001 exhibition on ukiyo-e, which placed this later work beside the older tradition it grew from.
