A graphite sketch from a sketchbook, this drawing pairs a team of horses with a canvas-topped covered wagon, the vehicle most associated with overland migration in the decades before the Civil War. Dated to about 1860, it belongs to the period when hundreds of thousands of Americans traveled west by wagon along routes such as the Oregon and California trails. Because the drawing was made in a sketchbook rather than as a finished print, it likely records a quick study from life, capturing the animals' posture and the wagon's bowed canvas cover in a few loose strokes.
