A horse and covered cart stand before a white frame building in Thompson, Connecticut, whose signboards advertise a County House, J. Griggs, and the Daguerrian Rooms of L.J. Phillips. This sixth-plate daguerreotype dates from between 1850 and 1860, and its cloth sign suggests that Phillips may have worked as an itinerant daguerreotypist who moved from town to town. Made on silvered copper, daguerreotypes produce a single mirror-like image, so the lettering and the cart's details survive with unusual clarity for the period.
