A horse-drawn cart set against a house in the background gives this wood engraving the feel of an everyday village or farm scene rather than a portrait of any particular animal. The record credits Alexander Anderson, the American engraver often called the first to practice wood engraving in the United States, and dates the print to about the 1840s. Engravings of this kind were usually made as small illustrations for books and periodicals, where fine lines cut into boxwood gave cheap printing a crisp, lifelike finish. The date comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified.
