A line of refugees moves along a road, with a horse-drawn cart rising in the background as the one sign of animal labor in the scene. The lithograph is attributed to Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, the Swiss-born French artist best known for his Montmartre posters and his sympathetic studies of ordinary city and rural life. In 1915, during the first year of the war, civilians fleeing the fighting in northern and eastern France were a common sight, and Steinlen turned his attention to their hardship. The cart, like the horses that pulled such loads, shows how families moved their belongings in these displacements.
