A large wooden raft and a horse-drawn cart loaded with lumber set this lithograph apart, showing timber moving through Brazil in the early nineteenth century. Thierry frères printed it after a drawing by Jean-Baptiste Debret, the French painter who lived in Brazil from 1816 to 1831 and recorded its everyday life. The plate is number 40 in his *Voyage pittoresque et historique au Brésil*, published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. The catalog tags point to enslaved labor, but the record is unverified, so the caption should be checked against the book.
