Horse teams and wagons heaped with wheat line up at the railroad freight depot in Mandan, North Dakota, with a tall grain elevator rising behind them. Such scenes were common across the Northern Plains around 1900, when farmers hauled their harvests by wagon to rail sidings, where the grain was lifted into elevators and loaded onto freight cars for shipment to eastern mills and markets. The horses, which did the hard work of moving heavy loads over dirt roads, show how central animal power still was to agriculture even as railroads and steel machinery reshaped the region.
