A horse-drawn wagon piled with 175 sacks of wheat stands alongside a railroad freight car, a scene that captures the grain trade at the point where farm produce passed from the field to the rail network. Photographs like this, dating to about 1910, were common in the early twentieth century, when rail shipping carried most of the country's grain to mills and ports. The team of horses that pulled the heavily loaded wagon was the main source of power for hauling on the farm and at the shipping depot before motor trucks became widespread. The image records an everyday labor of the period, when moving a harvest across a short distance still depended on animal strength.
