Two numbered cars, nos. 22 and 32, of the Fair Haven and Westville Railroad stand in New Haven, Connecticut, in this print from 1892 to 1893. The company ran horse-drawn streetcars, which were a common sight on American city streets before electric trolleys spread through the 1890s and replaced animal power. The picture records the transit system at the moment its days were numbered, and the teams and car bodies show how urban travel worked before the electric streetcar took over.
