Car No. 8 sits in the yard of a car barn in New Haven, Connecticut, one of the cars of the New Haven and West Haven Horse Railroad Company, photographed in June 1892. In the early 1890s, many American cities were replacing horse-drawn streetcars with electric trams, and the horses that pulled the older cars were housed and tended in barns and yards like this one. The photograph therefore records transit at a turning point, when animal power was still the everyday means of getting around town.
