Car no. 38 belonged to the Fair Haven and Westville Railroad, one of the streetcar lines carrying passengers through New Haven, Connecticut, in the early 1890s. Horses pulled cars like this one along tracks laid down the city's streets, a common sight in American cities before electric trolleys spread rapidly in the late 1880s and 1890s. The picture, dated to about 1892 to 1893, captures a brief transitional period when animal power and new electric lines existed side by side, and it shows how these cars shaped daily travel between the city center and outlying neighborhoods.
