This June 1892 photograph shows two streetcars, numbered 7 and 18, parked in the car barn yard of the New Haven and West Haven Horse Railroad Company in Connecticut. Horses pulled cars like these along fixed tracks, and by the early 1890s many American cities were replacing them with electric trolleys, so the scene captures a transportation system near its end. Car barns were where cars were stored, cleaned, and serviced, and where the horses were kept and tended. The image offers a close look at the vehicles and the working yard behind city street travel of that era.
