Car No. 19 of the New Haven and West Haven Horse Railroad Company sits in the yard of its car barn in New Haven, Connecticut, in a photograph dated June 1892. Horse-drawn streetcars like this one ran on rails laid through city streets, with teams of horses or mules pulling each car along its route and returning it to the barn at the end of the run. By the early 1890s, many American cities were beginning to replace these horse lines with electric trolleys, so a picture from this moment records a form of urban transit that was soon to pass. The barn yard setting also shows how much of a street railway's work happened behind the scenes, in the barns and stables that kept the cars and animals ready for service.
