Car No. 36 of the Fair Haven and Westville Railroad, one of the horse-drawn streetcars that ran through New Haven, Connecticut, is the subject here. The photograph dates from 1892 to 1893, a period when horse-car lines were still a common way to get around American cities. Electric trolleys were spreading quickly at the time, so this kind of animal-powered service was near the end of its run. The image records the vehicles, and the horses that pulled them, just before that change.
