Two numbered cars, nos. 1 and 4, sit beside a car barn in this 1892 view of the New Haven & Centerville Horse Railroad in Connecticut. Horsecars like these ran on tracks laid down city streets, pulled by teams that had to be fed, stabled and replaced, and the car barn served as both shelter and maintenance base. By the early 1890s, electric trolleys were spreading quickly through American cities, so pictures of horse-drawn lines capture a transit system already nearing its end. The numbered cars and the barn behind them are worth a close look.
