Car No. 10 of the New Haven & Centerville Horse Railroad is the focus of this 1892 photographic print, which shows the vehicle itself rather than the crowds or streets around it. Horse-drawn streetcars like this one ran on tracks laid into city streets and were pulled by teams of horses, and they were a common part of American town life in the late nineteenth century. Cars of this kind were soon replaced by electric trolleys in many cities, so a record of one in service now captures a short-lived stage in local transportation. Look closely at the car's body, its signage, and the animals in harness for details of how urban travel worked before motor vehicles.
