A boy sits at the reins of a horse-drawn wagon piled high with baskets, a scene of everyday rural trade in Hungary in 1923. The picture belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, made by a American travel writer and his family while they reported on countries around the world for newspaper readers. In the years after the First World War, Hungary was a largely agricultural country, and carts like this one carried goods to and from markets and farms. The photograph is useful for seeing how such work was done in that period, when horses still did much of the hauling.
