Evalyn Walsh McLean, the Washington socialite later known for owning the Hope Diamond, is shown here driving a horse-drawn carriage herself rather than riding as a passenger. The photograph comes from the Washington, D.C., studio of Clinedinst and was registered for copyright around 1911, when the automobile was beginning to spread among wealthy households. Her family fortune came from Colorado mining, and her marriage to Edward Beale McLean, publisher of the *Washington Post*, placed her firmly in the capital's social life.
