Two men sit in a horse-drawn carriage while two more stand alongside it, a arrangement that shows a moment of everyday travel held still. The picture comes from an album of Georgia life that W.E.B. Du Bois compiled around 1899 and 1900 for the Paris Exposition of 1900, part of an effort to present Black Americans' work and community life on their own terms. The print entered the Library of Congress through the Daniel Murray collection, and its surface shows visible damage from age and handling.
