Yellow Horse, a Yanktonai man, stands for this half-length portrait with long braids, two eagle feathers in his hair, and a buffalo skin wrapped around him. The Yanktonai are one of the Nakota, or Sioux, peoples of the northern Plains, and Edward S. Curtis made this portrait around 1908 while working on *The North American Indian*, his multivolume survey of Native peoples that began in 1907. It was published on page 124 of volume 3. Although the gallery groups it under horses, no horse appears in the picture, whose interest lies in the clothing and the sitter's upright, unhurried pose.
