Thomas American Horse stands full length in this c1899 portrait, turned slightly to the right, with his clothing and bearing as the main subject. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why a copy survives in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division. Photographs of Plains men and women in traditional dress were widely made and sold in the 1890s, a period when many Native communities were living under reservation rules and federal policies that restricted their lives. Looking closely at the costume and the pose shows how the sitter presented himself and how such images were composed for a public audience.
