The sitter is Young Man Afraid of His Horses, an Oglala Lakota man whose name, like many Lakota names, was tied to his family's standing on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. J.N. Choate made this cabinet card in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, home of the federal Carlisle Indian Industrial School, which drew students and visitors from many tribes around 1891. The seated, half-length pose with hat in hand follows the formal studio conventions of the period. The name's reference to horses reflects the central role horses played in Lakota life, though the picture shows only the man.
