Young Man Afraid of His Horses, an Oglala Lakota man, sat for this portrait in Washington, D.C., where C.M. Bell ran a studio that photographed many Native visitors who came to the capital on official business. The cabinet card format was popular in the 1890s, and studio portraits like this one were often sold to sitters, family, and the public. The name itself, which refers to horses, reflects the Lakota practice of naming people for deeds, traits, and possessions. The print also reminds viewers that Washington visits by Plains leaders were often tied to treaty negotiations and disputes over land and rations.
