Two boys on horseback fill the foreground at the corner of 14th and I Streets Northwest, with Franklin Square opening up on the left and shops lining 14th Street on the right. The picture belongs to a series of small Kodak card photographs from the mid-1880s to the mid-1890s, when inexpensive hand cameras let amateurs record everyday street life outside the studio. Downtown Washington at the time mixed government offices, hotels and retail, and a scene like this shows how children and horses shared the busy streets before automobiles arrived.
