Horses and carriages stand in front of the funeral home of C.W. Franklin, an undertaker in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a scene catalogued with a date of about 1899. At the turn of the century, the horse-drawn hearse was still the standard way to carry the dead to church and cemetery, and an undertaker's premises often kept both the animals and the carriages a funeral procession required. Chattanooga had grown into a busy railroad and industrial city after the Civil War, and this view shows a commercial trade serving that growing town. The motor hearse would not replace these carriages for roughly two decades.
