Horse-drawn hearses wait in front of a funeral parlor in what is likely New York City, a sight common on city streets between 1908 and 1924. Horses still anchored the funeral trade then, and matched teams, dark drapery and plumes signaled the respect owed to the dead. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a news photographer who recorded everyday street life in the city during these years. It also catches a transitional moment, as motor vehicles were beginning to take over work the horse had long done.
