Few streets in Manhattan were as hazardous as 11th Avenue, where freight trains once ran at street level along the far West Side. Until the elevated line now known as the High Line opened in the 1930s, trains shared the avenue with wagons, trucks and pedestrians, and mounted men known as the West Side cowboys rode ahead of locomotives, waving flags to warn people off the tracks. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency active in New York in the early twentieth century, made the picture. The record's title comes from an unverified caption, and no date is recorded.
