Few hotels in turn-of-the-century Manhattan were as closely tied to New York's wealthy as the Plaza, which stood at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South. What sets this view apart is the street traffic in the foreground, where horse-drawn cars share the roadway with electric streetcars, a visible sign of the shift from animal power to electric transit then under way in the city. The record's date of about 1901 comes from an old caption card and has not been verified, but the mix of vehicles fits the period. The copyright credit to Underhill suggests it was made as a commercial city view.
