Horse-drawn fire engines race through a city street on their way to the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire, which broke out on March 25, 1911, in a loft building near Washington Square in Manhattan. The blaze killed 146 garment workers, most of them young immigrant women, and it became a turning point in labor and fire safety reform in New York. The photograph came from the Bain News Service, a wire agency whose negatives are now held by the Library of Congress. Worth noticing are the horses themselves, which were still the backbone of city fire companies just before motorized apparatus replaced them.
