Its title places the print on the night of December 16, 1835, when a bitterly cold winter blaze swept through lower Manhattan. Water in the hydrants and pipes froze, leaving the fire engines of the day with little to pump, and the flames spread through the commercial district near Wall Street, destroying several hundred buildings, including the Merchants' Exchange. The print's later date, around April 1836, suggests it appeared within months of the disaster, when the city's rebuilding and the firefighters' struggles were still widely discussed.
