A new motor-driven fire engine, photographed in New York City with a fire chief named Kenlon, is the focus of this print from the George Grantham Bain Collection. The caption card records no date, though one of its subject tags reads "Autos--1912," which suggests the picture dates from that year. Around then, American fire departments, New York's among them, were replacing horse-drawn pumpers and hose wagons with gasoline-powered apparatus, which reached blazes faster and did not need horses stabled and fed. Bain News Service, a photo agency, distributed pictures like this one to newspapers, so the image shows how the change was presented to the public.
