Few pictures in the Bain collection show the mechanical side of early firefighting, and this one opens the engine compartment of a motorized fire engine to expose its machinery. Bain News Service, the New York photo agency George Grantham Bain founded around 1899, sold news pictures to newspapers, and its glass negatives document the shift from horse-drawn apparatus to motor fire trucks in American cities during the 1900s and 1910s. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified agency notes, so the engine's make and city remain uncertain.
