Little beyond the title survives for this negative, which the Bain News Service recorded as a motor fire engine, so the picture is best read against its period. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of press photographs made by a New York news agency that operated from the late 1890s into the 1920s. In the 1910s, American cities began replacing horse-drawn pumpers with motorized apparatus, which could reach a blaze faster and did not need a stable of horses. Pictures like this one record that shift in equipment, when the new machines were still a novelty in many towns.
