Two men lean over the open engine bay of an early automobile, a scene that captures the hands-on relationship many owners had with their cars in the 1910s, when motoring was still new and repairs were often done at the roadside. The photograph belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a large body of commercial pictures made in Washington, D.C., and the Library of Congress holds it among its prints and photographs. The date is only a estimate, shown in brackets as c. 1916, so the exact year is uncertain. Worth noticing is how the men's attention centers on the exposed machinery rather than on the car as a showpiece.
