Chamlee, the subject named in the caption, is shown studying the motor of an automobile, a close look at machinery that was still new enough in the early twentieth century to draw press attention. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the New York news photography business that supplied pictures to newspapers of that era. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards the service compiled, so who Chamlee was and why he was examining the engine remain unconfirmed. The scene still shows how closely early motorists worked with their own cars.
