Men training to work on cars at a Washington, D.C. auto school, photographed around 1922, show how quickly motor vehicles were moving from novelty to everyday trade. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington life for decades, made this print as part of a large body of city views. Vocational schools like this one prepared returning veterans and young workers for jobs in the growing repair shops and garages that kept the city's automobiles running. The scene offers a useful glimpse of how hands-on mechanical training was taught in the early 1920s, before automotive instruction became standard in public schools.
