Two men sit close together in the cabin of an open automobile, their postures stiff and formal in the manner of early studio-era portraiture, though the setting is the car itself. Around 1910 the motorcar was still a novelty for most households: cars were expensive, often hand-built, and driving required mechanical know-how, so being photographed in one signaled both wealth and a taste for the new. The record is thin on who the men were or where the picture was taken, but the composition is worth a closer look for its evidence of how early motorists presented themselves to the camera.
