Three men stand beside an automobile in front of an American Library Association building at Camp Cody, the Army training camp near Deming, New Mexico, where National Guard units trained before the end of the First World War. During the war the ALA ran the Library War Service, which set up libraries in army camps so that soldiers had reading material during their off-duty hours. The car parked by the building points to the steady traffic of officers, visitors and supply vehicles that moved through a camp of this size. The photograph is a useful record of how a wartime library looked from the outside.
