Two men posed in what the title calls the first American automobile, a spindly 1890s machine built when inventors were still learning how a gasoline engine could replace the horse. The print is dated around 1927, decades after the car's era, and its copyright notice names John W. Stoyer of Highland Park, Michigan, a city later tied to the auto industry through Ford's plant there. The image shows how early motoring was remembered by the late 1920s, when cars had become ordinary. Note how closely the vehicle still resembles the buggy it was meant to replace.
