Two men sit close together in the cramped body of a racing automobile, a scene captured on a 5 by 7 inch glass negative. The title was supplied by a cataloger, so the record does not name the men, the car, the race, or the date. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain's news service in New York sold photographs to newspapers in the early 20th century, when motor racing drew large crowds and frequent press coverage. Pictures from that trade often served as quick visual records of the sport's drivers and machines, so the plate is worth reading as an example of how the newswire photographed early automobiles.
